Abstract

Game media has been used in education because it has proven effective in increasing students' interest and engagement. However, there are challenges in the development process of educational games, namely the need to consider both the learning aspect (pedagogy) and the game aspect (game design). Previous studies have developed educational games with a primary focus on the learning aspect. While this aspect is a important in the development of educational content, game design is also equally important, especially in creating an engaging game experience. Without attention to the game aspect, educational games are at risk of becoming digital textbooks. The Mechanics-Dynamics-Aesthetics (MDA) framework can be used as a strategic approach to guide the game design process so that educational games developed also offer a good game experience. In this study, the subject matter applied in the game is computational thinking, which is one of the essential skills that the young generation required to face challenges in the digital era. The implementation process of the MDA framework in the educational game is presented to provide a structured overview, allowing this approach to be adopted by other researchers. ADDIE and GDLC were used as this research methodology. The MDA framework was integrated into the design phase of ADDIE and the pre-production phase of GDLC. Game testing using the expert judgement method resulted in evaluations from subject experts and media experts of 81% and 91.25%, respectively, indicating that the game is suitable for use both in terms of subject content and media. User testing result shows 79.8%, indicating that the computational thinking game developed by implementing the MDA framework is rated as good from the perspective of user game experience.
